Lulu Ballard was a gifted athlete who won four ATA Singles titles and was one of the dominant players of the 1920s. Eight years after she won her third ATA Singles title, Ballard ended Ora Washington’s quest for eight consecutive championships when Washington succumbed to sunstroke. Despite the heartbreaking defeat, Washington would team up with Ballard to dominate the ATA doubles tournaments from 1925 to 1936. They won the ATA Women’s Doubles Championship from 1925 to 1930, in 1932, and from 1934 to 1936. In 1938, Ballard also won the ATA Mixed Doubles Championship.
Ballard was inducted into the Black Tennis Hall of Fame in 2011.
